Madridisuserfriendly recommendation:

HOTEL WELLINGTON *****
MUF ‘s special recommendation. On Velazquez Street, it is small, classic and userfriendly hotel. It is also the one chosen by the bullfighters during the San Isidro Fair in May. Fun bar. Not a great restaurant, but all the rest is just very nice Spanish hospitality. Close to shopping, Prado, Retire, and lots of restaurants. “In” disco, Gabbana, nearby.  Not cheap, not that expensive, worth every penny. Very userfriendly.

SMALLER HOTELS

These are well located and should be medium priced around 75€.
Some have lots of stars (four) so the price could vary enormously according to the season or time of year.

Need to watch these stars in Spain…they often assure amenities, - like an elevator or en suite bathrooms, which probably didn’t exist when the original star system was created!-, yet it doesn’t always assure quality… the difference between a five and a four star is often enormous…except in price... On the other hand, there may be very little difference between a three and a four star in amenities, but the price could be much better in the three stars. MUF feels the four-star hotel is almost a lost cause…maybe not worth paying the difference.

VINCCI VIA 66****

HOTEL HUSA SERRANO ROYAL****

HOTEL PETIT PALACE LONDRES**** - Calle Caldo, 2
Located in the centre nearby Plaza del Sol, Palacio Real and Puerta del Sol

These have fewer stars and offer good price/quality...

NH BALBOA***
Nuñez de Balboa, 112

HOTEL NH EMBAJADA***
Calle Santa Engracia, 5
This hotel has been rehabilitated and the interior is totally remodelled. Located in a central zone of Madrid, close to the Plaza de Alonso Martínez metro and nearby the Paseo de la Castellana and of the Plaza of Colon. The hotel is ideal for business stays. From 70€ per night.

Hotel El Prado ***
The Prado 3  is located in the hippest neighborhood in all of Madrid, the bohemian and “happening” Lavapies area. The Prado and Reina Sofia Museums, the Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Opera House, and the Retiro Park are all within easy reach.

There are four important hotel chains in Spain. They offer a good choice, are reliable and generally well placed.  Difficult to go wrong with any of them. They have webs in English and one could get a good price buying a room on- line. If you are planning to travel from Madrid, they are good about arranging for your lodging along your trip, as they have hotels all over the country.

HOSTALS
However, apart from hotels there is less expensive alternative, the Hostel. Comfortable, hey are not as luxurious and offer less services. Nonetheless, they are an acceptable option for the seasoned adventure traveller.  These are also classified and inspected carefully.   It will depend on what the visitor is looking for and his needs. They are often hard to distinguish from small hotels and can be better value for money. They are graded from 1 to 3 stars. A 3 stars hostel is generally on a par with 2 stars hotel.

A suggestion: Hostal Castilla- located in Chueca zone, close to Gran Vía and very well communicated.  Have a look at their web and it’ll give you a better idea. www.hostalcastilla.com

PENSIONS
Pension or PENSIONES are another option, these are family-run establishments with simple rooms and shared bathrooms. Again, they are legal and inspected regularly.

A suggestion: Pensión El Retiro- in the heart of the City, in an old building dated back to XIX. Close to Atocha train station. 30€.  Calle San Pedro, 1.
pensionretiro.iespana.es , in English.

APARTMENTS
For longer stays, this could be a good option. They can be rented from about 30€/60€ per night. www.30madrid.com in English

Apartamento Centro
Apartment Centro has an unbeatable location as its name suggests, right in the heart of Madrid, just seconds from the Puerta del Sol, and steps away from the lively Plaza de Santa Ana. From here you can easily reach the Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, and the three major museums of the Spanish capital: the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen Bornemisza all on foot. 35€. Modern, 60 m²
